Issues : Scope of dynamic hairpins

b. 8-9

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

in AI & AF

in FE

No sign in EE

in GE1

Inverted long accent in GE2

..

We consider that the  hairpins in AI and AF are of the same range – the mark begins over the d1 crotchet in AI, and under the f1 minim in AF, hence in both cases on the 2nd beat of the bar. In GE the mark is a reversed long accent at the beginning of b. 9, yet it is highly likely that it was reproduced inaccurately due to the transition into a new line, starting from b. 9 – an earlier beginning is particularly indicated by its placement in GE1. Therefore, uncertain as to the exact range of the mark in [AG], in the main text we convey the hairpin after AF.
The version of FE is inaccurate, whereas the one of EE – erroneous.

The  hairpin was used to specify the notation and was introduced by Chopin probably in [AG] (→GE). However, according to us, it is likely that the beginning of the mark was reproduced inaccurately, which is indicated by the beginning of the respective mark of AF in analogous b. 117-118.

In the main text we give the most accurate indications of GE1, most probably corresponding to the notation of [AG]. The minor differences in the range of the signs in FE, EE and GE2 bear hallmarks of inaccuracies and have a negligible impact on the meaning of the marks. See also b. 31.

dimin.  in GE

..

In the main text we give the version of GE, which is probably later. In AF one can see that the hairpin blends with the L.H. slur, which could have prompted Chopin to use a verbal indication in [AG]. In FE the hairpin breaks at the end of the line, in b. 74, which EE reproduced in the simplest way possible by inserting a complete mark of such a range.

The  hairpin in AF seems to be inaccurate, since it overlaps with the  mark, which concerns the same phrase. Moreover, it was already considered inaccurate in FE (→EE). In the main text we give the mark of GE, compliant with the remaining editions.
